Newport Dunes Marina Outdoor Movie - Newport Beach, CA

I’ve really had a brain fart recently finding new things to do. Not to say there aren’t things I’d be willing to do....there are plenty of festivals and fairs still going on; but I figured that would start to get old (plus I don’t want my love of corn dogs to go away). I was still perplexed on finding something when Saturday approached. In my pajamas and with my decaf coffee, I scoured the internet for anything that would be good. I had finally resigned myself to drive 3 hours for a sandwich (which, not to give too much away, will happen at some point) but decided to go get my nails done first (have to look pretty for sandwiches). Kevin, not wanting to drive 3 hours for a sandwich (yet!), offered to look for some ideas while I was gone.

By the time I got back Kevin (who rocks) and found a great idea that was a cheap, and even better still, it was practically in our own back yard. We decided we were going to go to the Newport Dunes Marina. They show outdoor movies on the beach every weekend.

Kevin’s idea was a great idea, but it was also an “on the\in the” activity, which really is the best kind. In Milwaukee during the summer months, they have Drunks in the Park Jazz in the Park every Thursday night in downtown’s Cathedral Square. I’m not a big fan of jazz, but being in the park is awesome, and I always have a good time. Most activities are best when they are “on the\in the”. Like having dinner on the lake, or watching fireworks on the roof, or checkers in the tree house. I suppose some “on the\in the” things wouldn’t be so great, like taking a crap in the jail, but most things are so I’m going to go for it.

The movie didn’t start until dusk, so Kevin and I went searching for a place that served dinner before 5. HA HA HA! Apparently there is no such thing as dinner before 5PM on a Saturday in Southern California. We ended up getting appetizers in the bar at Habana, and then got dinner to go at Memphis once they opened. I’m really only telling you this so I can post the pictures of Habana and Memphis at Kevin’s request. Here they are:

Memphis

Habana

We managed to get to the marina a good hour before the movie started. It was only $10 to get in (for parking) and a short walk to the other side of the lagoon to get to the movie area. There weren’t that many people there when we first arrived so we managed to get pretty good seats up front. We were a bit confused on what they were going to show the movie on so we were absolutely amazed when they started ‘blowing up the screen’.

I guess now is a good as time as any to tell you that they showed ‘the Goonies’. I actually saw ‘the Goonies’ in the theaters when I was eleven - two days in a row to be exact (hey! I was eleven!) - not to mention countless times on TV since then. Kevin, however, had never seen it before and I could tell by the look on his face that he was pretty skeptical of this Spielberg masterpiece. But he ended up really liking it. I kept on looking over to be sure.

Seeing a movie on the beach was really great. There really is nothing like watching a movie with your feet in the sand, cool breeze and the smell of a campfire near by, eating a semi-warm hamburger from a to-go box, drinking wine out of plastic party cups, sometimes getting distracted by the huge yellow moon over the water, and watching someone who has never seen ‘the Goonies’ really enjoy it.I definitely want to do this again.

Kevin will want me to mention that there was a wedding reception going on the other side of the lagoon. The little kids had glowing light-sabers which with the darkness were really visible from far away. They also had karaoke going on and two, probably already smashed, wedding guests doing the worst bubble-gum metal song ever. Two guys, back to back, screaming\singing “AAAAAAAAA! (inaudible lyrics here)”. They literally had a crowd of non-guests peering through the fence to take a look at the humor. At the end of the song, one of the guys brought the microphone back to the DJ and said matter-of-factly, “Now THAT’S how it’s done.”

***************************

Almost completely forgot! Remember last time when I said that the bartender at Skosh Mohahan's had to dress in full makeup because he lost a bet with one of the waitresses (Broncos vs. Raiders!). Here's the evidence that he actually went through with it:

Moe,

Happy-to-get-my-Moe-fix greetings from Trinidad! Even at the southern end of the Caribbean I can post at the top!

It's 11:23pm here, and I have to be on the plane in less than 9 hours, so I'll be going to sleep. But thanks for the insight into a heretofore unknown beach activity! It looks like a blast, really.

That bet, by the way, Raiders v. Broncos, would never have happened in Denver. Betting against the Broncos is a hanging offense in Square States. ;-)

K's commentary on today's pics:

1. Memphis...damn good crackloaf--uh--meatloaf.

2. Kick-ass pic of that corner in Habana, Moe! They should put that on their website.

3. Between you and me, Moe, the guy strumming the acoustic, singing kiddie songs...barely escaped with his life--and guitar.

4. Warning: watching movies on inflatable movie screens may cause nausea...or flashbacks to Woodstock.

4a. Guy strumming guitar probably was.

5. Ah, Fascist Island, Newport Beach. Wait. We live here?!

6. Bubbies!
(shout-out to Ellie)

7. Yep, Skosh's (not Pogue Mahone's) lol

8. Yes, Ed, what was Gary thinking betting on the Raiders? At least he didn't bet against Green Bay.

By the way, Gary makes the most hideous...wait a minute, is he posing in front of a Polygamy Porter shirt on purpose!?!

Pok.

Yes, Kevin made the comment that he thought you might just be waiting at the site hitting the refresh button to make sure you were the first one to post. ;-) I think I'll chalk it up to dumb luck.

Looking forward to that entry!

*POKEY-PANTS*

What is a Polygamy Porter shirt? And yes, he does not make a pretty girl.

I have to agree, I wanted to kill that guy with the guitar as well. What was worse was when I accidentally made eye contact and he walked over to stand right in front of us.

Never saw an inflatable screen before! Glad you enjoyed the movie! It's always fun to drink in the park, especially in the States where is usually illegal.

I have a question for your friend Ed:
How is Trinidad? Is it worth going? Did you go to Tobago, too? I'll be in the neighborhood and wondering if it's worth going. Never met anyone's who's been there yet!

Hi Shannen!

Yes, it was a good time. Not a good time as in seeing wildlife in the Galapagos Islands, but fun never the less.

I told Ed to respond back to you. ;-) He was there for work, but I think he might have done some sight seeing.

MOE,

Well, I don't think it was dumb luck, and it wasn't any kind of obsessive thing. I just was getting online late every night, and you typically post late at night. I check out NewThisWeekend pretty much nightly until there's a new post. It's a must-read! Tell Kevin, if I was really competitive, I'd set up an RSS feed or whatever they call it so I always know when there's a fresh post. heehee!

SHANNEN,
I went to Trini thinking it would be dangerous, because that's what people told me... but it wasn't scary or anything. I think it's good advice, though, to not be out alone or in very small numbers. My driver was a very laid back guy, but he agreed I should probably not just walk out into town. There's a bit of anti-tourist violence. So, if you went with a tour group or something, I suppose it would be fine!

But would you want to go? Trinis live in very poor conditions compared to us wealthy north americans. That seems to be true all over the bahamas/caribbean unless you spend all your time at a resort (well, in Nassau and Trinidad so far). But, the people I met are great and they are happy, they live like you and me, really (just sleep in delapidated houses and eat in run-down restaurants and shop in ramshackle strip malls).

All in all, I'm looking forward to going back. Next time I'll do more sight-seeing. Tobago? maybe someday...

I'll be providing photos soon and a description of the food!

I guess I would be more jealous of watching a movie ON THE beach if it wasn't 80 degrees in WI in October. The trees are also doing an amazing job showing their true colors and I wouldn't give that up for the beach. On second thought, I may give that up if I could have Mephis meatloaf whenever I wanted it. mmmm meatloaf.

Moe,

Thanks for passing the question on to Ed!

Ed,

Thanks for the advice! I've heard that Trinidad is a little dodgy and Tobago is nicer, and thought maybe you'd gone on holidays. Sounds like not, but an interesting experience none-the-less. It's a cheap ferry from mainland Venezuela, and always nice to know whether it's worth doing. I'll probably put a no on that trip. Thanks!

Hi Bethhead!

I've heard about the great weather WI is having! Hope Favre doesn't sweat all over the football this Sunday. Hee hee. We had meatloaf sandwiches just this past Friday. They were awesome. I'll send you one! ;-)

Hi Maggie May!

I LOVED your voicemail message. Did you and Adam go out drinking? HA! I saved the message for prosperity. I may have to use it against you if I don't get a good Christmas gift this year. HAHAHA! Just kidding!

The Packers...oi. I blame the Bears personally.

Looking forward to Christmas! We will definitely have another night out after we put the folks to bed. ;-) And yes, letters are a must.
